Eagle

The American Spirit

The eagle statue has long been used by both the United States government and the Native American people to celebrate a majestic bird that symbolizes power, majesty and freedom. It is seen not only in statues but also in paintings and other works of art as well. What bird can capture the American spirit better than the bald eagle? It certainly would not be the turkey, which could have been our national bird if Ben Franklin had gotten his way. The eagle has amazing eyesight to represent an ability to discern and look into the future, it has strength to overcome difficulties and to triumph over enemies and other threats, and also has beauty and grace which are becoming of any nation. An eagle statue to adorn your home or office can be a beautiful addition.

Centuries Past

For centuries, well before the United States government adopted the eagle as a symbol, the Native American people revered this bird and immortalized it in dance, story, song, and as and eagle statue. Some of the legends about the eagle say that it is a symbol of fertility. Others say that it is able to deliver from famine, just as it cares for its young. It is also reputed to be able to look right into the sun without harm. Even today, an eagle statue is a common Native American theme.

As stated before, Ben Franklin wanted to name the wild turkey as our national bird because it was crafty and fast-and James Audubon, a noted bird scientist said that the eagle was a lazy thief. But, as soldiers during the Revolutionary War were fighting in one of the early battles, they saw a group of eagles circling over them and screaming what sounded like “Freedom!” So, the reason for the Eagle Statue was born in 1787 when the bald eagle was named our national bird. It is not only found on the seal of the United States but many states have also included it in their coat of arms.

United Nation

If you see and eagle statue clutching arrows in one set of talons and an olive branch in the other, this is a representation of what you will see on the seal of the United States. The arrows represent strength and the olive branch, peace. The shield covering the chest of the eagle statue or seal has 13 stripes representing the 13 original colonies. The banner in its beak has the statement “E Pluribus Unum” which translated means “from many-one.” From many people and states we have become a united nation.

Where Can I Find One?

To find an eagle statue you don’t have to look far. There are statues of every shape and size on the internet. Even if you just want to take a look there to see what is available on the market, this is a good idea. You can find many statues with a patriotic or American theme to them or if you want an eagle statue with a more Native American flair you can find that as well. If you are uncomfortable buying a statue over the internet because you are concerned about quality and security, you should go to a local art gallery or dealer and see what they have in stock. Because the eagle is a common theme, you may be able to find one to take home that day. If not, the dealer may know an artist that offers this type of sculpture and they can point you in the right direction. You could also try a gallery that specializes in Native American art.

Whether it is simply an adornment at the top of a flag pole, or a beautiful sculpture in a place of prominence in your home the eagle will be a nice addition.
